The charred oak glass, turning

The oak glass

Charred inside,
like the cask it came from.

Turned from a single block of white oak and charred on the inside, the way a cooper wakes a cask with fire.

The story

Oak has spent centuries holding whiskey, so we asked it to do it once more.

Each glass is turned from a single block of white oak; the lathe does the turning, the hands do the knowing. Then it is charred inside, like the cask it came from. Outside, the grain stays honey-gold and calm beneath your fingers. Inside, a darker world waits for the pour. Lift it and it is already warm, before the whiskey has touched it. On its flat base, small and quiet, sits our mark. The last pour of the evening, finally in the right hands.

The oak cup being hollowed on the lathe

Turned

Hollowed from a single block.

The glass begins as one block of white oak on the lathe. The inside is taken out one slow pass at a time, by hand and by eye, and what is left is the cup.

Flame playing across the inside of the oak glass

The char

Woken with fire.

A controlled flame, then the glow dies and leaves a fine dark crackle that the whiskey will find.

The oak glass · The care card

What it is, what it does well, and how to keep it.

What it is
Turned from a single block of white oak and charred inside, like the cask it came from. Hand-crafted in India. Holds around 325 ml (about 11 oz).
What it does well
The finish is food-safe and satin to the touch. The glass is leak-proof, it never sweats, and it does not break easily.
Looking after it
Hand wash with mild soap and dry it upright. Never soak it. Keep it out of the dishwasher, the microwave and the fridge, and keep hot drinks out of it. Don't leave a drink standing in it for hours. Every once in a while, after many uses, rub in a little 100% food-grade mineral oil and 100% natural beeswax.
Good to know
This is wood, so the grain and the char differ from glass to glass. One-year replacement warranty.
